Introducing Argos: Sovright's ZEC Recovery Tool Is Live
In the earliest days of Zcash, there was no official wallet. Independent developers built non-custodial wallets, typically on their own, with limited resources and no institutional backing.
That software mattered. It allowed people to access and use the most mature private digital currency in the world. But maintaining a free wallet without support is hard to sustain, and over time several of those early wallet providers ceased operations. When they did, a group of early Zcash users were left unable to access their ZEC — even though they still held valid seed phrases. For some, that has been the case since 2022.
We at Sovright built and launched Argos to fix this.
How Zcash holders lost access to funds they still owned
A non-custodial wallet doesn't hold your funds. It holds the keys that let you reach funds recorded on the blockchain. When maintenance ceased for the Zcash wallet client ZecWallet Lite, and it eventually went offline, the ZEC itself remained intact on the Zcash blockchain. What disappeared was the software needed to access it.
That left some ZEC holders in a difficult spot. Many didn't realize anything was wrong until they tried to access their ZEC — sometimes years later — and found that the wallet they'd relied on was no longer functional. The funds were still theirs; there was just no easy way to reach them.
How Argos recovers stranded ZEC
Argos is a free ZEC recovery tool, launched to help users of the original ZecWallet Lite client access their stranded ZEC. You enter the seed phrase you used in ZecWallet Lite, enter an address generated in a compatible wallet, and your funds are securely migrated. Compatible wallets include ZODL, Vizor, Zingo, Unstoppable, Noir, and Cake.
Recovering funds with Argos requires users to enter a seed phrase, which makes trust the central design concern. Argos was built as a minimal interface on top of the same libraries that ZODL and Zebra already use, keeping its footprint small and adding few additional trust assumptions beyond what many Zcash users already rely on.
The tool was audited by Least Authority, a security firm specializing in decentralized technologies; you can read the full audit report. Zingo Labs also worked on this problem, and their efforts were a reference point as we built Argos.
The work continues
Following our recent mining pool testnet, this is our latest step in building reliable infrastructure for the ecosystem. Argos restores access to ZEC that users have been locked out of for years. Though the amounts vary, the principle is universal: it's your money, and you should have it.
